BUCHAN JOINS PANTHERS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Halifax Panthers are pleased to announce the appointment of Martyn Buchan to the clubs board of directors.

Buchan is the newest addition to the board, following the appointment of Adam Butterfield in June 2025. Born and bred in Stainland, Halifax – Martyn is a lifelong Fax supporter. A business development director at Activate Group in Dean Clough, providing accident management and repair services to insurance companies, Buchan will add expertise to the strategic and planning side of our operations.

“First and foremost, I’d like to say it’s an honour to be appointed a director of the club I’ve supported from being a boy so I don’t underestimate that, It’s a great privilege.”

“My late father was a fan of the club. I started playing Rugby at Stainland when I was 11, and then got into coming to see Halifax. I picked up the bug and became a regular at both Thrum Hall and down at The Shay more recently. I had a small hiatus when my kids were young but I’m back at it home and away pretty much every game now.”

“My background is in financial services, and I’ve held several corporate sales and business development roles so feel I have a strong understanding of how businesses should run.”

“I’m looking to help with some of the longer term strategic stuff and planning, also have a look at the commercial proposition that we’ve got and see if we can do it. Obviously, it’s a difficult time to be a Rugby League club as we all know, so we’ll be looking to see if we can do something different to help grow our commercial revenues and also make the club sustainable on a long term footing.”

“In the short term, I think we can probably reach out to some more businesses than we’ve got at the moment. We’ve got a loyal band of sponsors who we couldn’t do without, I think it’s looking to see if we can expand that remit. We’ve got the stadium being improved and the digital boards coming down and things like that which gives us more options, so it’s really about trying to do that and push it along.”

“I think everyone here, the goal overall is Super League. We’re probably a little bit away from that at the moment if you look at the IMG ratings and those type things. I think we’ve got some work to do to get this club Super League ready and sustainable so that actually, it can be taken on and the dream of the Super League in the future if not the short term.”

CEO Damian Clayton commented: “I wholeheartedly welcome the appointment of Martyn as a Director of Halifax Panthers. Martyn brings with him a breadth of experience across the financial services industry and a strong set of professional competencies that will significantly enhance the capability of our Board. His pragmatic and amiable approach, coupled with a proven ability to drive initiatives forward, will add real value to our strategic direction and commercial propositions.

“As a force multiplier, I’ve no doubt Martyn will play a key role in helping the Panthers take confident steps towards our ambition of being Super League ready – both on and off the field. I look forward to working closely with him as he finds his feet and begins this exciting chapter with the club.”
