Awarded an MBE in 2002 for services to Rugby League in the Armed Forces, recognising his role as the driving force to the sport gaining full recognition within the military. He is the current Armed Forces representative on the RFL Community Board and frequently deputises on the RFL Council. As a player, Clayton captained the RAF Rugby League side from 1994 until 2006 and also represented the UK Armed Forces. Most recently he coached the UK Armed Forces in the 2017 World Cup in Australia. As a Performance Coach he has worked with England RL, Halifax RLFC, Castleford RLFC and Bradford AFC, specialising in leadership, teamwork, communication, culture, ethos and core values.
