Halifax Panthers suffered back to back home defeats as Swinton Lions left The Shay with the spoils in a 12-28 score line on Sunday. Despite a brief Second Half fightback, the Panthers are still without a win in 3 games and sitting 12th in the Betfred Championship table.
Liam Finn reacted to the humiliating 0-46 defeat against Sheffield Eagles by ringing the changes. Joe Keyes returned to the starting lineup with Louis Jouffret moved to Fullback, James Woodburn-Hall shifted to Centre with Zack McComb locking the scrum at Loose Forward. Reinforcements on the bench came from the injury delayed Brandon Douglas and the returning Ed Barber, both making their second debuts for their hometown club.
However, for the first 40 minutes the changes didn’t have the desired effect as once again Halifax squandered chances to finish another half of Rugby scoreless, with Swinton running in 4 tries from Mitch Cox, Jayden Hatton, Dan Abram and somewhat controversially Johnny Vaughan. Dec Patton chipped in with 2 conversions to give the Lions a 0-20 lead at the break.
Barber and Douglas were introduced early on the second half and their impact bore fruit, Louis Jouffret dummying his way over before Greg Eden went in at the corner from some nice interlinking play on the left. Jouffret converted both to give Fax a chance at 12-20.
Finn’s decision to stack the deck with attacking firepower certainly gave Fax more creativity than they have had in recent weeks but a lack of confidence was on show as poor choices and final passes not sticking, coupled with Swinton being ruthless in their play meant the Lions were always in control of the game.
Dec Patton added a penalty from Kevin Larroyer leading with the elbow, which saw the Frenchman sin-binned. Then Jordan Gibson sealed the game, dummying his way through some soft defence to go over unopposed. Patton converted to wrap the game up for the Lions, who once again left the Shay with the 2 vital Championship points. Halifax Panthers 12-28 Swinton Lions.
