KAVANAGH SIGNS NEW ONE YEAR DEAL

Halifax Panthers are delighted to announce that Ben Kavanagh has signed a new one year deal with the club, keeping him at The Shay until the end of the 2023 Betfred Championship season.

Halifax born Kavanagh first joined the Panthers back in 2019 having previously enjoyed spells with Widnes Vikings, Wakefield Trinity and Hull Kingston Rovers.

Despite suffering a horrific dislocated hip during the 2020 pre season, Kavanagh worked hard to regain his fitness again before showing the Fax faithful why Simon Grix wanted to bring the hometown lad back to The Shay, enjoying some solid form in 2021 before taking it up a level this year.

The 34 year old back rower has been in sensational form this season, contributing 5 tries to go along with some blistering displays on the edges of the Fax backline.

The Scotland international was happy to be committing his immediate future to the club after a hot run of form in the Betfred Championship.

“I’m really enjoying my rugby this year and it was a no brainer to sign again with my hometown team so I’m happy to do that,” said Kavanagh. “I feel like I’ve been playing at a decent level this year playing in the back row, which I enjoy. I’ve developed a good partnership with Keyesy (Joe Keyes) and I suppose if you’re enjoying it, you play a lot better. I always wanted to finish my career down at Halifax, I’m 34 years old now and
knocking on a bit but depending how the body feels next year, I could go again after this contract.”

And Panthers head coach Simon Grix was delighted to have his man on board for another year at least.

“There’s no denying how good he’s been this year, particularly off the back of a really bad injury in 2020. He came back, had a solid year last year and played more games than we expected. Then this year, he’s picked up where he left off last year. He’s been great. He looks after himself really well which helps his longevity.”

“He can be devastating with ball in hand and he likes to bang people, to be honest. He likes to get after people in defence so we get an aggressive back rower who plays a big part and every game he has a significant impact in so I’m really happy he’s over the line.”
